As a family of six, finding the perfect vehicle that balances luxury, technology, and practical space is a tall order. We recently had the chance to put the 2026 Acura MDX Type S to the test, taking it from our daily routines all the way to a snow-filled adventure at the Sea to Sky Gondola. While there is a lot to love about this performance-oriented SUV, our experience highlighted some significant hurdles for larger families.
The 2026 Acura MDX Type S Ultra is the high-performance pinnacle of Acura MDX trims, carrying a price tag of approximately $94,015 CAD. Under the hood, it boasts a potent 3.0L Turbo V6 engine delivering 355 horsepower, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and the brand’s signature Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. To tame that power, it’s equipped with high-performance Brembo brakes, which contribute to that “touchy” braking feel we experienced. While it offers a luxurious ride with advanced technology, such as a 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and Google Built-in, its fuel efficiency is observed at 14 L/100km, reflecting its focus on performance over economy.
The Highlights: Luxury & Sound
The interior of the MDX Type S is truly a high-tech sanctuary.
-
Front Seat Comfort: The massage seats for the driver and front passenger were a lifesaver on our longer drive to the Sea to Sky Gondola.
-
The View: A massive panoramic moonroof spans the cabin, which was a magical feature as we watched the snow falling while staying warm inside.
-
Acoustic Excellence: Although our kids were initially worried about the lack of a built-in entertainment system, they were quickly won over by the speaker system. The audio quality is incredibly crisp, making our audiobooks sound better than ever.
-
User-Friendly Tech: We loved the heads-up display and appreciated that Acura kept physical buttons for many controls rather than forcing everything into the touchscreen.

Performance & Handling
Driving the Type S is undoubtedly fun, but it comes with some quirks:
-
Sensitive Braking: We found the brakes to be quite “touchy,” requiring a period of adjustment to get used to the stopping power.
-
Winter Woes: A major concern for us was the heated steering wheel. Compared to other vehicles we’ve tested, it barely got warm. In a Canadian winter, you really want a steering wheel that can effectively thaw your hands.
-
Fuel Efficiency: The vehicle chugs gas at a rate of 14 L/100km. In today’s world, it’s hard to justify such high consumption without at least a hybrid option for these large 3-row SUVs.
The Family Logistics: Seating vs. Storage
Managing four kids (ages 13 to 3) in a three-row vehicle is always a puzzle.
-
Seating Configuration: We arranged the kids in two rows, with two in the middle and two in the back. Because the middle-row chairs flip forward easily, accessing the third row, even with car seats involved, was no problem.
-
The Storage Struggle: This is where the MDX Type S fell short for our family of six. While the front of the vehicle feels incredibly long, it doesn’t seem to translate to interior room. The third row desperately needs more leg and headroom, and the trunk is surprisingly small.
-
Packing for the Mountain: We struggled to fit all our snow gear, boots, and suits into the trunk. For comparison, our older Acura MDX model managed to fit all four kids, a double stroller, and enough luggage for a road trip from BC to California. We simply don’t think this new model could handle that same trip.

Final Thoughts
The 2026 Acura MDX Type S is a beautiful, tech-forward, and fun-to-drive vehicle. However, for a family of six with high storage needs, the trade-off between the long hood design and the cramped rear cargo space is a tough pill to swallow. If you have a smaller family or don’t frequently travel with a full load of gear, the luxury features might outweigh the space constraints. But for those of us frequently heading to the mountains with a full crew, we’re still waiting for that perfect balance of performance and true family-sized utility.
To be honest, we already miss this vehicle! Transitioning from our faithful 2009 Acura MDX to the 2026 Type S felt like stepping into the future, and it’s a vehicle our family is still buzzing about. While the price tag is definitely a significant jump, the incredible drive and luxury features made a lasting impression on all of us. Even with the storage hurdles, if the opportunity ever arises to upgrade our daily driver, this ‘modern marvel’ has officially earned a permanent spot on our family’s ‘some day’ wishlist. After all, any car that can keep four kids happy with audiobooks and massage seats is a winner in our books!
