When the end of my maternity leave was quickly approaching, as well as our family vacation to Disneyland, I started to get that urge to do something with my hair. I wanted a change. My hair had not been cut, coloured, or styled professionally since before I had my youngest daughter. It had been over a year! I started putting it out there that I was looking for salon recommendations from friends and family and one place kept coming up. Mystique Hair Design.
Stephanie, the owner and creative director of Mystique Hair Design, contacted me through Instagram and we got to chatting. Next thing I knew I had an appointment to get to go sit in her stylist chair and have a much-needed mommy hairstyle makeover! To say I was excited is a complete understatement.
When I arrived to Mystique hair design in White Rock I was warmly greeted by the receptionist and immediately felt calm and welcome. Anyone else become nervous before a hair appointment? I tend to get nervous because I have had several disaster appointments. My hair was cut to my shoulders and I was turned blonde before me wedding. It was the stuff of nightmares I tell you. These experiences have caused me to be very selective of who comes near my hair with colour and scissors.
I knew as soon as the consultation started that I was in good hands. Stephanie was very thorough with finding out about my hair history. Did I have colour in my hair? Salon colour or box colour? I was asked about what I was hoping to have achieved at the salon that day. I had brought a whole collection of images with me thanks to Pinterest. Together, we were able to go through them and a plan was created for my hair.
Going into the appointment I just knew I really wanted some highlights to add dimension to my hair and that I had been loving the ombré hairstyle. My husband had sent me in with only one rule… I was not to become completely blonde!
It was decided to do a hair painting technique on my full head to achieve the look I was hoping for. I had never seen hair painting like this before. Normally when I hear hair painting or balayage I think of hair stylists taking bleach in its typical runny form and painting it across the hair. Not this time!
The hair painting was done with a clay lightening product. It was incredible to watch as Stephanie and Linsday applied it to my hair. The would put the product on the back of their hand and then sweep it across the sections of hair they wanted it applied to. The best part for me was that it did not have the same smell as lightening products for hair usually have. Dare I say that it actually smelled good?
While waiting for everything to process I got to relax and enjoy a lemon citron herbal tea (there is also coffee available), and a eucalyptus hand towel that was nice and warm. There was also a delectable macaron from Spiritual Ingredients which is a neighbouring business to Mystique.
To top it all off there were anti-aging eye patches from La Biosthetique that I had applied during processing. They felt so incredible to have on. They were nice and cooling. I also got to scroll through all of the latest magazines thanks to a tablet that was provided to me for my viewing. I cannot tell you the last time I was able to sit and go through a whole magazine in one sitting. I actually read my way through multiple magazines that day! It was glorious.
Before the colour application was started Stephanie did the majority of the cut for my hair too. Several inches were taken off. Originally I did not want much off, but I was convinced otherwise upon the explanation of why my hair needed it. This is just one of the many reasons I loved my experience at Mystique Hair Design, the time was taken to explain everything to me.
Once everything was done processing my hair was washed and a toner was added to complete the colour process. The amount of depth and dimension added to my hair by the hair painting process has left me so thrilled with how my hair looks. It’s been a long time since I was this happy after having my hair done. The look that day was completed with some waves and two fishtail braids. I’ve never thought to add two quick braids like that too my hair, since then I’ve become hooked on braiding.
The staff at Mystique Hair Design were incredible, professional, and so welcoming. My experience there was the best I’ve had in a salon in a long time. It will be my go-to location for getting my hair done. One of the great things about the technique done to my hair is that I am able to wait several months if I want before having the colouring process done again. I just need to continue to maintain my hair’s health by getting regular trims until then.
